This scholarship award is named in honor of Mrs. Thelma J. Washington, mother of Ms. Rhetta Washington McCoy. Mrs. Washington was a woman who exemplified immense integrity and one who stood firm on her personal convictions. Her strong belief in helping others and her community was an example for many to follow, particularly her daughters who continue her legacy of service to the community.

This award is to assist a deserving African American female high school graduating senior, attending a Dallas ISD school, with furthering her educational pursuits beyond high school. The award is to be presented to a young woman who holds a strong belief in providing service to others and her community as exemplified through her actions, words and/or deeds, while maintaining high scholarly standards.

The winner will be selected on the documentation and recommendations submitted.  The winner will be honored in Spring 2024.

  1. Must be an African American female.
  2. Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
  3. Must be involved in community service activities.
  4. Must be a high school senior in the Dallas Independent School District.

  2. Upload the following documents via a shared Google folder:
    1. Digital photo (headshot)  in JPEG or PNG format
    2. Official high school transcript with rank and unweighted GPA (4.0 scale)
    3. Two letters of recommendation
    4. Write, in 500 words or less, on how you have provided service to your community and others while maintaining high scholarly standards. Please provide specific examples on how your actions, words and/or deeds have helped others.
    5. Documentation of volunteer hours, awards, etc. with dates of activities and total hours calculated
  3. Attach and send documents to the Kappa Zeta Scholarship Committee via your shared Google folder. To organize and share your scholarship documents via Google Drive for the Scholarship Committee: Create a folder in your Google Drive. Update the share settings on your folder to include that "anyone with the link" may view. Your main folder should be titled: First Last_23-24 KZ Scholarships (ex: Jane Doe_23-24 KZ Scholarships). Inside of the main folder, you will create and name five (5) additional folders titled as listed on the student checklist.  Click here to download the student checklist. Send the folder link to [email protected] by 11:59 PM on Friday, March 31, 2024.
