Scholarship

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. is a community-conscious, action oriented organization. Since its inception in Dallas in 1931, Kappa Zeta Chapter, the local arm of this organization, has provided services and support to the Dallas Metroplex. One of our major thrusts is scholarship which has been the impetus for awards averaging $5,000 to $10,000 per year to deserving high school seniors who participate in our special scholarship program, Miss Blue Revue. We are pleased to announce the additional scholarships being offered by our chapter. Descriptions of each can be found below.

Fairilla E. White Scholarship

The Fairrilla Emory White Scholarship was established as a tribute to a historic black educator and charter member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Kappa Zeta Chapter. Mrs. White, born in Dallas on Oct. 7, 1898, was to be cited as Dallasʹ ʺoldest living teacher of recordʺ however, she passed just two days shy of the award presentation.

An education pioneer, Mrs. White graduated from Dallasʹ Colored High School in 1916 and Bishop College in Marshall, Texas, in 1920. She taught at Southern University in Baton Rouge, La., and returned to Dallas in 1922. She taught math at Dallasʹ Fred Douglass and Phyllis Wheatley elementary schools and, beginning in 1924, at Booker T. Washington High School.

Purpose: The scholarship is to be awarded to a female high school senior who has excelled academically during their high school career.

Eligibility Requirements:
    1. Must be a female high school senior
    2. Must plan to pursue post high school studies (2 or 4 year college/university)

The Scholarship Award: The winner will be selected based on the documentation and recommendations submitted. The winner will receive a scholarship in the amount of $500.00 and will be notified by February 2011. The winner will be honored during a special program on the evening of Saturday, March 27, 2011.

Josie Washington Memorial Scholarship

The Josie Washington Memorial Scholarship is in memory of a very devoted member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Kappa Zeta Chapter. Josie Washington was an educator in the Dallas public schools, who taught much of her career at Lincoln High School. During her life she belonged to many organizations and volunteered her services wherever needed. Upon her death Josie Washington left an endowment to her sorority. The Kappa Zeta chapter elected to set up a scholarship fund to honor her memory and generosity to our chapter.

Purpose: The scholarship is to be awarded to high school seniors who are considered “Unsung Heroes”: students who have overcome usual circumstances, performed humanitarian services or heroic deeds in the community, school or through their public or religious affiliations.

Eligibility Requirements:
    1. The services performed cannot have been services performed for pay.
    2. Must be a high school senior, within Dallas County limits
    3. Must plan to pursue post high school studies (2 or 4 year college or accredited Technical/trade School)

The Scholarship Award: The winner will be selected based on the documentation and recommendations submitted. The winner will receive a scholarship in the amount of $500.00 and will be notified by February 2011. The winner will be honored during a special program on the evening of Saturday, March 27, 2011.

Juanita Buchanan Undergraduate Academic Scholarship

The Juanita Buchanan Undergraduate Academic Scholarship is in memory of a very devoted member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Kappa Zeta Chapter. During her life she belonged to many organizations and volunteered her services wherever needed. The Kappa Zeta chapter elected to set up a scholarship fund for Collegiates to honor her memory to our chapter.

Purpose: The scholarship is to be awarded to an undergraduate matriculating at an accredited Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex college or university.

Eligibility Requirements:
    1. Must have a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0
    2. Must be involved in community service and/or organized campus activities


The Scholarship Award: The winner will be selected based on the documentation and recommendations submitted. The winner will receive a scholarship in the amount of $500.00 and will be notified by February 2011. The winner will be honored during a special program on the evening of Saturday, March 27, 2011.
